Indeed, tomorrow is a new year.
Yet, in reaching for my usual John O’Donohue’s blessings – For a New Beginning and For a New Year – I sensed that 2023 might require something different of us.
I don’t know what it is, though I suspect we might need more courage and hope than we have been used to cultivating.
Therefore, I offer a different blessing to carry across the threshold and into the new year:
A BLESSING FOR OVERFLOWING HOPE
In the stillness of
your darkest place,
where no light is seen
and no birdsong heard –
may you hear the sound where hope comes from.
In the frantic, mindless,
oh-so weary space,
where your days turn
like a never-ending wheel –
may you sense the flow where hope comes from.
When you long to
give gifts of colour and life,
yet all you have are
dry brown dusty leaves –
may you sip gently, it won’t run dry.
Let it touch your emptiness,
wash your layers of grime,
refresh your dormant senses,
calm your anxious mind,
open your beating heart,
and stir your soul to life.
Then, may you know
source of beautiful hope
for this grey and crumpled world.
And may you join the flow.+ Sue Heatherington, for The Presence Project
And in that flow, may we also learn to stretch our courage muscles to go where we need to go.
A few simple thoughts for the in-between time. With love.
