Start where you are

Where do we start moving?

For most of us it’s right here, not with heroic leaps into the unknown or grand visions of another world.

But starting with small steps in the present.

David Whyte’s poem Start Close In is a potent reminder of the call to begin from where we are.

Starting with the first step, the one we don’t always want to take.

Starting with what we know, with our own question.

Starting with the step we can call our own.

I wonder, what do we need to pay attention to right now to take the first step?

~ Thanks to Julian Summerhayes for reminding me of David Whyte’s poem. It is the first poem in his pocketbook Essentials and can be found elsewhere. Do search out the whole poem – it is timely.
