A most necessary release

It’s hard to let go of things that have defined us.

Yet, we cannot both hold on to the old and grasp the new simultaneously.

Indeed, this voyage into autumn reminds us that death precedes re-birth.

The leaf must change colour. The seed has to fall.

This stripping away is essential to prepare for the new, even though it exposes our emptiness.

For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.

This is the second verse of the blessing For a New Beginning, by John O’Donohue

In light of this, what might we need to name and be prepared to let go?
